Dear Christopher Nolan

Dear Christopher Nolan:

Dunkirk was long overdue. I finally harnessed the strength to watch it. Thank you for striving to bring forth the best in humans. Thank you for portraying how dark we can be, how evil we can become, but also how we can Rise from our respective pits. Thank you for believing in the potential for goodness in people, of individuals, regardless of their skin or affiliation. Thank you for signaling to little acts of piety and kindness, and how they pay dividends in the future. Thank you for showing us that there's no shame in surviving, but there's no greater glory than the one distilled from the voluntary sacrifice in exchange of others' wellbeing.

Please do not stray. You are on the right path. Do not succumb to the ill winds that blow these days. Steady your course. Do not point at the gaps and the chasms. Film the bridges, record the overpasses. Use IMAX to signal at them. There is heart in art, but the heart can be deceived. There must also be wisdom. This is why fables were so treasured up until the XXI Century.

But if you should see yourself compromised, turn off your camera, and wait for the winds to recede. Stay afloat.

Stay afloat.

We will wait with you.
